Specification Questions We Get Often

For an open or semi-open patio under a pergola, a 40,000–50,000 BTU unit is the standard contractor starting point. Coverage drops in exposed conditions with wind, so factor your enclosure level — a fully open setup in cold ambient temps will lose radiant efficiency faster than a three-season space with a louvered overhead. Size to the worst-case condition, not the average night.

Clearance-to-combustibles is the controlling spec — most freestanding propane heaters require a minimum vertical clearance of 24 to 36 inches from the emitter head to any overhead structure, and lateral clearance from fabric or wood. Check the unit's listed clearance specs before positioning under any canopy or louvered roof. Never operate in a fully enclosed space without verified ventilation.

A spiral stainless emitter radiates heat in a 360-degree horizontal pattern and is more impact-resistant in high-traffic outdoor use. A glass tube emitter produces directional infrared output with visible flame effect, which increases perceived warmth at closer range. Glass tube units are better suited for semi-permanent placements where contact risk is low; stainless emitters hold up to frequent repositioning.

About Our Patio Heaters

A propane patio heater is a freestanding radiant heat source engineered to offset ambient temperature drop in open-air or semi-enclosed outdoor spaces. The core specification is BTU output — the rate at which the unit converts fuel to usable radiant energy. For three-season use in northern climates, output in the 40,000 to 50,000 BTU range is the functional baseline. Below that threshold, performance degrades in sustained wind or sub-10°C ambient conditions. Frame material and emitter type govern durability and heat distribution pattern. Powder-coated aluminum and stainless steel components resist corrosion in wet climates. Emitter geometry — spiral versus linear tube — determines whether output is omnidirectional or focused. Buyers should also assess ignition system reliability, tip-over shutoff certification, and wheel or base configuration based on whether the unit will be repositioned regularly or fixed in place. ETL or CSA listing indicates the unit has been evaluated against a published safety standard — a relevant distinction when placing any combustion appliance near a structure.
